                                                          He&She
♥A Teen Love Story with a happy ending♥
                                                       By: Sammyy

He was what all high school students called a “nerd”. Wore big framed glasses, had a 4.3 GPA on a 4.0 scale, loved video games, favorite subject was math, liked most animes, and loved computers. He was always quiet when he wasn’t around his friends. He never really called just anyone his friend, except for a select few. Being 17 years old, he never had a girlfriend or ever even kissed a girl, and didn’t plan on it any time soon. He had his crushes here and there, but soon the feelings just went away within a couple days, which explains why he never really asked someone out.

She was what all high school students called “popular”. Long brown-layered hair, “pretty”, 3.8 GPA, all of her closest friends are from different cliques (from the nerds up to the punks), funny, random, and short. People often thought that she knew everyone in the entire high school. But she just loved talking to people. It was very rare though that she was in a relationship. Being 16 years old, she’s had some pretty rocky relationships for her age. She always considered herself a hopeless romantic. She absolutely LOVED writing poems, song lyrics, and love notes. Believing in fairy tales and “happily ever after” always seemed to be her one dream.

Both He&She were best friends. Different on some accounts, but they talked endlessly to each other. Whether it was on the phone, MySpace, or at school, they always talked; strange topics from video games to relationships to whom will take over the world: Pineapple or Cheese. No matter the topic, He&She always laughed and smiled when they were around each other, never seeming to get bored of one another.

There was one big secret the girl had though. She kept it to herself for over a year, never telling anyone, not even her closest friends. She only kept it to herself. What was this BIG secret she had?? It was her feelings she had toward him. She really liked him, even though many people called him a “nerd.” She liked him so much, that she thought that she may even LOVE him. Yes… L.O.V.E him. But she wasn’t really too sure, never really been in love, she wasn’t sure if these feelings she had for him was even love.

She wanted to tell him theses feelings, but was afraid of rejection. With any other guy she wouldn’t care if they rejected her… but a simple “No.” from him, would just tear her whole world apart. She then made herself a promise, “The next time he calls me, I’m going to straight out tell him! No matter what!” It so happened that seconds after that, her cell phone rings. It’s him!! He’s actually calling her! She double checked her caller ID to make sure she isn’t just hallucination over the fact that it’s him. Sure enough, it’s him! She answered the phone, both stuttering and nervous. She’s going to tell him. She’s going to do it!! But, she has this weird feeling in her throat. Her heart is pounding and the cell phone is slipping through her sweaty hands. Why can’t she just say it!? It’s right there on the tip of her tongue. She opens her mouth… yet nothing comes out. She breathes in and out slowly; she’s going to do it for sure this time. The conversation carried on… she never told him.

Two months have pasted, it’s Halloween. She’s in her first period class of course; Chemistry. Sitting in the back corner of the room in her “pimp” costume, she sat there doodling on her notes. The teacher was passing out Halloween grams, those small cards that people send one another that come with a candy. She never got one, and never really cared either. “-------“  her teacher called her name. She looks up quickly and confused. Her teacher walks to her desk and puts the Halloween gram on her desk with a candy necklace and bracelet. She grabs the candy gram and checks to make sure that it was address to her. And sure enough, it was for her. She looked on the top of the gram where it said, “To and From” to see who could have possibly sent it; it was blank. One thing she noticed quickly about the gram was that it was typed. So, there was no possible way that she could tell how sent her the gram. She reads the gram:

“People say hate is such a strong word, but so is love… and it’s thrown around all the time. But know this much, I love you, I do. Happy Halloween. <3”

She couldn’t believe it. Her very first secret admirer and love note. She couldn’t help but smile at the fact that someone actually LOVES her. She wanted it to be from him of course. If the note came from him, that would just light up her whole world. But it couldn’t be from him though. He’d never think of her in THAT way, would he? If he did, he would have told her already, right? Either way, she wanted it to be him so much.

Her next class was her favorite, only for the fact that he was in there. She always rushed to get to that class early just so she could say “Hi” to him. Well in that class today, they had free time, the perfect time for her to show him the gram. He looked at it, and had this puzzled expression on his face. He had no idea he said. But, he knew that the guy must be a computer nerd for the fact of the “<3” at the end of the gram. Her heart sunk…it wasn’t him. She knew it wouldn’t be him of course, but, it didn’t hurt to think it right? She just put it back into her bag and just talked the rest of the class away, still wondering at the back of her mind who sent her the gram.

It’s the end of the school day, and she is walking towards the front of the school, where she walks her way home. She suddenly felt someone bump into her arm, turned around and saw it was him smiling. She couldn’t help but smile back, just looking at him made her get butterflies inside. The first thing that came out of his mouth was that he knew who sent the gram. She didn’t really care anymore knowing that it wasn’t him, but she pretended as if she was interested. Begging him to tell her who it was from, all he said was, “I don’t know.” She played along of course, constantly begging him who sent it. She asked one last time, but this time he stopped. He faced toward her looking directly into her eyes. She felt calm every time she looked into his bright brown eyes. Her heart started to pound against her chest again. She didn’t know it, but so was his heart. He placed his hands on both of her shoulders, took a deep breath and said:

“It was me…”

He lifted his hands off of her and just walked the other direction toward the buses. She didn’t move an inch, not even a blink. She couldn’t believe it… it was him after all. Then, a smile spread across her face, the biggest smile she had ever smiled before. She was so happy now. She closed her eyes tightly and a tear rolled down her face as she jumped into the air! Her heart rate increased by 4 folds!! It felt like it was going to just pop out of her chest. She calmed down and put her hand over her heart as if to prevent her heart from exploding with joy. All she could do was just turn around and start walking home, with him on her mind the whole entire way.

The next day, he asked her to be his girlfriend. She accepted of course without skipping a heart beat. Finally, she was with the one that she truly loved, and he got the girl of his dreams. They had their first kiss a few weeks later, underneath the endless night sky, as a flood of shooting stars filled the air above them. And they lived…

I really liked this piece. It's plot wasn't predictable, probably because it was based on actual events, but it really gave it a sense of reality. It didn't sound like some fairy tale; it was real.

That being said, I hate the last line. The entire piece is beautiful and real, and that makes it all the more powerful and effective. It's a story that could happen to any one of us, and that resonates a chord of hope which makes the piece so effective. However, adding "happily ever after" to the end makes it a fantasy, a fairy tale. There's no such thing as "happily ever after," and I don't say that as a cynic. There will always be strife and conflict that exists. A spouse gets layed off, a parent dies, an outside conflict (like a war) makes life extremely difficult... "happily ever after" doesn't allow for such hardship and strife. But there can still be love and joy, even in these hardships where happiness is hard to find... which makes life wonderful.

I was actually really excited when I read the last two words of your second to last paragraph. "They lived." And I was excited because it was so full of promise and still so real. They lived,. Not just existed, not something fairytale... but they really lived and lived life to the fullest. Despite all the hardships to come... they lived.

I think that's how you should end it, right there... just.... They lived. It's beautiful, effective, full of promise... and yet realistic, which makes it all the more powerful... because it's possible to happen to any of us.
